Trading Journal

Record the original thesis, planned and actual execution, result in R, adherence, mistakes, and notes in a journal that can be exported for review.

Synthetic educational examples

Core concepts

Use these concepts as explicit rules rather than changing them after seeing the outcome.

P

Plan and outcome

Record what was intended separately from what happened and whether the plan was followed.

R

Result in R

Normalize outcomes by initial risk so trades with different prices and sizes can be compared.

T

Consistent tags

Use stable setup and mistake categories so patterns can be aggregated later.

Interactive lesson

Record a trade as its plan was written, score it after the exit, and export the record.

New journal entry

Browser storage
Use the simulated trade in Trade Management as a journal-entry example. Any symbol (it was synthetic), setup Pullback, long, one-hour timeframe. The result in R is what the simulation reported when it finished; “followed the written plan” is what its discipline score said, and each deviation gets its tag. Write the thesis line as it stood before the trade — the plan on that page — not as the outcome makes it look now.
Ready. Journal data stays in this browser unless you export it.

Trading journal process

Capture enough information to reproduce the decision and diagnose execution without rewriting history.

1

Record before entry

Save context, setup, trigger, entry, invalidation, target, and management plan.

2

Capture actual execution

Record fills, changes, partial exits, and deviations while they are factual.

3

Score after exit

Store result in R, plan adherence, execution score, mistake tags, and notes.

4

Export and review periodically

Use a consistent review interval and preserve backups outside browser storage.

What to record

1
Before entryContext, setup, trigger, entry, stop, target, and planned management.
2
During executionActual fills, changes, partial exits, and whether each action followed the plan.
3
After exitResult in R, execution score, mistake tags, and a factual description.
4
During reviewAggregate patterns across setups, regimes, mistakes, and rule adherence.

Common mistakes

1
Recording only winners and memorable tradesSelective records produce misleading performance statistics.
2
Writing the thesis after the outcomeHindsight changes what appeared knowable before entry.
3
Using vague notes without categoriesFree text alone is difficult to aggregate into actionable patterns.
4
Judging quality only from profitA well-executed trade can lose, and a poorly executed trade can win.

Completion standard

✓
Finish when you have recorded, exported and re-imported one complete entry.

Thesis written as it was before the outcome, result in R, plan adherence, execution score, and a mistake tag wherever one applies. The simulated trade in Trade Management supplies this example.
