Breakout Setups

Evaluate breakouts using a defined boundary, close outside, acceptance or retest, structural invalidation, and room to the next level.

Core concepts

Use these concepts as explicit rules rather than changing them after seeing the outcome.

B

Boundary

The range edge or structural level must exist before the breakout occurs.

A

Acceptance

A close outside followed by continued trading or a successful retest is stronger than a wick through the level.

R

Room

A valid breakout is not automatically a good trade when the next opposing level is too close.

Interactive lesson

Change the inputs, inspect the chart, and evaluate the decision before revealing the answer.

Confirmed breakoutAdvance candle by candle; decide using only visible information

Breakout setup process

Separate the structural event from the decision to enter.

1

Define the boundary

Mark the range edge or structural level before price reaches it.

2

Observe the break

Require the candle-close rule specified by the setup.

3

Confirm acceptance

Use continuation outside or a successful retest according to the entry model.

4

Plan invalidation and target

Place failure beyond the reclaimed level and confirm adequate room.

Breakout classification

Score 0 / 0

Minimum breakout evidence

1
Defined boundaryA range edge or structural level is visible before the break.
2
Close outsideThe analysis-timeframe candle closes beyond the boundary.
3
Acceptance or retestPrice continues outside or tests the boundary and holds.
4
Room and invalidationThe next opposing level permits the required reward with a structural stop.

Common mistakes

1
Entering on the first wick beyond a boundaryIntrabar movement can reverse before the analysis-timeframe candle closes.
2
Chasing far above the levelLate entry can destroy reward-to-risk even when the breakout later succeeds.
3
Ignoring nearby resistance or supportA clean breakout can still have no practical room to the next opposing level.
4
Redefining a failed breakout as a pullbackWhen price returns inside and invalidates the model, cancel or reassess the setup.

Completion standard

✓
Finish when you can choose enter, wait or no trade at every candle for the checklist’s reason.

That includes wait after a close that has not yet been accepted, no trade when a valid break has no room, and no trade once price closes back inside — on every tab, without scrubbing ahead.
